A Loddon couple will be joining a group of motorcyclists on a two-day charity ride from Ness Point in Lowestoft to Land’s End in Cornwall.

The team of seven - including Colin and Christine Hartley of Loddon - will be representing First Eastern Counties transport operator and will be riding more than 450 miles from east to west visiting First buses depots along the way.

The group will be raising funds for the Poppy Appeal to help the Royal British Legion Riders Branch reach their £1,000,000 target as part of its 10th anniversary celebrations.

Mr Hartley, who organised the fundraiser, works as a depot supervisor at First’s Lansdowne Road and Vulcan Road depots in Norwich, and will be joined by Norwich bus drivers Alan Brenkley and Adrian Kemp, along with their wives, and his brother-in-law Jimmy Sturman, who is a relief standard-bearer.

The Royal British Legion Riders Branch has raised £540,000 for the Poppy Appeal since 2004 - a cause very close to Mr Hartley following 12 years of service in the army as a driver specialist.

He said: “My grandfather was in the army during the First World War and my father served in the Second World War.

“We formed a group last year where we got together and went out on bike rides. When the riding season finished we went out for a meal and started talking about what challenges we wanted to set ourselves this year.

“We wanted to ride from Lowestoft to Land’s End on the longest day of the year but we decided to split it over two days and raise money for charity.”

The group will be setting off on their challenge next Thursday and hope to reach the finish line by next Saturday. They are aiming to raise £l,000.
