An appeal has been launched to trace the family of a First World War soldier and reunite them with one of his medals – found hidden in the loft of a Bungay home.

Lizzie Samkin, 32, who is renovating the property in St John’s Road with her husband, discovered the medal after her uncle lifted up some glass fibre in the loft.

The medal, which includes the words The Great War for Civilisation 1914-1919, was awarded to F Leslie of the Royal Artillery, and is known as a Victory Medal. It was awarded to those who entered a theatre of war between August 5, 1914, and November 11, 1918, and was issued to those who received the 1914 Star, the 1914-15 Star or British War Medal.

The soldier’s regiment and number are inscribed around the rim, and the obverse of the medal depicts the winged figure of victory.

Mrs Samkin said: “I was really surprised to find it.

“When we were taking the kitchen out we found a newspaper which was 30-years-old to the day and then to find the medal when we are marking 100 years since the start of the war is just really strange.

“It doesn’t have much monetary value, but I just want to get it back to people who care about it.

“I have cleaned it up a bit because it was quite dirty but I didn’t want to do too much because I wanted to keep it authentic for the family.”

The medal also contains the letters BMBR and F Leslie’s serial number 127920.

Mrs Samkin said: “I did a search on a site which tells you people who died during the war but the name didn’t come up on that and I looked on the war memorial in Bungay but he is not there either.

“The family who lived here before don’t know the name so it means it must have belonged to the people living here in the 60s or before.

“But even if I find his details it still doesn’t help me find any of his family and he might not have even been from Bungay.”

Anyone with information about the medal, F Leslie or his family can email amy.smith@archant.co.uk who will pass the details onto Mrs Samkin.
