A quartet of Norfolk and Suffolk communities are celebrating today after sharing a £1m cash boost to help build or refurbish village halls.

The Big Lottery Fund has announced it is handing out major grants to Warham in north Norfolk, Gissing in south Norfolk and north Suffolk’s Huntingfield and Westhorpe.

The Warham Reading Room charity has received £488,311 to improve and extend a dilapidated community building in the village near Wells.

It will provide a new roof, disabled access, a kitchen, baby changing facilities, central heating and a larger hall space.

New activities will include a children’s play group, a mother and toddler group, and a job club.

In Gissing, near Diss, the charity Heart of Gissing has been given a £21,306 development grant to help progress plans for a new community building.

Huntingfield Parish Council has gained £471,440 to develop plans for a shared community hall with neighbouring Ubbeston and Heveningham, near Halesworth.

An ex-army hut no longer fit for purpose will be knocked down to make way for a new hall.

A grant of £41,660 will go to the Westhorpe Village Hall charity, which plans to build a new hall.
