Three crews of firefighters last night tackled a fire at a three-storey industrial building at Cantley Sugar Factory.

They were called at 9.50pm, and first of the crews from Acle, Great Yarmouth and Gorleston arrived at the scene at 10.05pm.

The fire service said the fire was in animal feed hopper in a pallet store, and firefighters used breathing apparatus, main jets with water from a hydrant to extinguish the fire and a thermal image camera to check for hotspots.

An aerial ladder was also sent to the scene as a precaution, because of the size of the building, in case firefighters needed to tackle the fire from outside the building.

A spokesman for British Sugar said: “We can confirm that some equipment over-heated at our Cantley factory last night. In line with procedures, the affected area was safely evacuated and the local fire service attended. There has been no further disruption to our operations.”
