A LOWESTOFT man raped a woman in her home after spending the evening with her at a pub in Southwold, Ipswich Crown Court was told.

At the end of the evening, Clive Bonnett walked the woman back to her house and on the way he allegedly kept trying to put his arm round her, the court heard.

Robert Sadd, prosecuting, said the woman, had been drinking during the evening and when they got back to her house, Bonnett took advantage of her condition and raped her.

Bonnett, 46, of Coopers Drive, Lowestoft, has denied raping the woman in April last year.

Giving evidence on Monday, the woman told the court she was in a relationship at the time of the alleged rape but had felt sorry for Bonnett after his wife left him.

She claimed that when they got back to her house, Bonnett had pulled his trousers down and raped her after pushing her dress up. She claimed she told him “no” and said she didn’t want to have sex with him because she had a boyfriend.

Cross-examined by Andrew Thompson for Bonnett, the woman denied she had lied about the rape because her boyfriend had been upset about her going to the pub with Bonnett.

The trial continues today (Tuesday).
