Staff at a Memorial Park supporting a charity for bereaved children have presented them with the efforts of their latest fundraising.

Waveney Memorial Park and Crematorium at Ellough are supporting Nelson’s Journey and staff handed over a cheque for £5,000 - bringing their total support to over £9,000 in less than a year.

Memorial Park manager Mark Drake said the latest donation would fund a weekend for 37 children to receive therapy from support workers and have fun with other young people going through a similar experience.

Waveney Memorial donated over £4,337 in October, bringing the amount they have raised to £9,337.

The money was raised through a recycled metals scheme run by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management (ICCM).

After a cremation, remains may contain metal from orthopaedic implants such as hip or knee replacements. These metals can be recycled through a specialised company with the proceeds shared between charities and organisations associated with bereavement support.

Mr Drake said: “We chose Nelson’s Journey as our nominated charity after visiting Smiles House and seeing the fantastic work they do in helping children through the most difficult of times.

“It is a great privilege to be able to donate funding to Nelson’s Journey as we know this will be used to make a real difference to so many people, not only today but also in the years ahead as these young people develop into adulthood.”

Corporate Funding and Marketing Officer for Nelson’s Journey Sonya Roebuck said: “My own son was supported by Nelson’s Journey in 2015 and from our own experience of the bereavement journey, I can honestly say that the support weekend that my son attended was an absolutely invaluable weekend, it was the turning point in his journey for both remembering his loved one and for knowing it that was OK to smile, laugh and have fun too.

“I’m absolutely thrilled that Mark and his team have so kindly given other young people the chance to experience these too, thank you so much!”
