Network Rail has shared plans for how it will spend more than £2 billion to improve train services in East Anglia between 2019 and 2024.

The Anglia Route Strategy Plan provides details on how the company will enhance the existing services, with over £400 million being used to improve the condition of tracks.

A further £70 million will be dedicated to refurbishing overhead equipment on the lines out of Fenchurch Street and key resignalling projects.

Work will also be completed to improve structures such as bridges and earthworks.

As well as this Network Rail have said they plan to work with Greater Anglia to introduce 1,000 new carriages to reduce travel times between London and Colchester, Ipswich and Norwich.

Transport for London will also be delivering a new timetable with additional services to East Anglia, with earlier start times and later finishes.

Meliha Duymaz, Network Rail’s route managing director for Anglia, said: “Investment in rail is critical to powering economic growth with more trains, faster services and better connections which is a key part of our Railway Upgrade Plan.

“This also means greater demand on the network as we address the challenge of running more services while maintaining performance and reliability, which we know is what is most important to passengers.”

Network Rail director of route asset management for East Anglia Eliane Algaard added: “We are expecting to see continued passenger growth into the future and this investment should allow more trains to run more reliably.”
