The widespread snow across East Anglia could start melting over the weekend as temperatures rise above freezing.

Up to 30cm have fallen in parts of the region this week as the Beast from the East brought sub-zero temperatures.

There is a very small chance that some parts of East Anglia may see some more snow fall this evening but by tomorrow the snow should start to thaw.

“There is potential for snow to the south of the region but it is very low risk and will be very light,” said Adam Dury, of Norwich-based Weatherquest. “If anywhere gets some it will be Suffolk and Essex, there is very little chance Norfolk will get any.

“But the snow that is in Norfolk will stay there today before it starts to melt tomorrow as temperatures could rise to 3C.”

Temperatures today will remain below freezing and gusts of up to 50mph could cause snowdrifts, especially along the coast.

On Thursday temperatures remained as low as -3C but due to strong winds it felt as cold as -13C in some parts of Norfolk.

Hundreds of schools across Norfolk and Suffolk remain closed and there are still problems on the roads, especially on the A140 and A146 in Norfolk.

The next problem for drivers is likely to be ice with the Met Office issuing an additional yellow warning yesterday lunchtime for ice between midnight and 9am on Saturday.

The previous snow and then rain will create ice patches on untreated roads on Saturday morning, making driving conditions difficult, especially in more rural areas. Rain and sleet showers will then take over at the weekend.
