Penalty box action, Beccles v Bungay

Beccles got the better of neighbours Bungay, scoring a 6-2 success in Saturday’s Anglian Combination League Division One table-topping derby.

As opening 10 minutes go, it must be recorded as one of the must best ever by the Wherrymen. David Shade opened the scoring when left alone to nod home a Harvey-Cooper cross.

Five minutes later Luke Bailey made a run down the left and crossed for Joe Clarke to slot home. Three minutes later Clark was set free from midfield, waltzed around the Bungay keeper and rolled the ball into the net to open up a 3-0 lead.

The match settled into a more even contest but on 30 minutes Beccles saw Shade launch a long ball for Clark to chase. He reached it ahead of the Bungay keeper and chipped him for goal number four.

It was Bungay who stepped up at the start of the second half and within two minutes clawed a goal back, Dom Mirner applying the final finish.

On 60 minutes Beccles restored the four-goal advantage when Keiron Bale beat the full back down the right and crossed for Ray Masters to roll the ball over the line. Five minutes later Bungay were gifted a goal when a great one on one save from Beccles keeper Danny Cable, deflected back to roll into an empty net.

The pace of the game was taking its toll and tired legs led to some dubious tackles causing a flurry of yellow cards. On 75 minutes Clark was replaced by Harley Pluck and a minute later the hard-working Luke Bailey got his reward when he ploughed through several attempted tackles and rammed the ball home for 6-2.

Bungay’s bad day was compounded when Hunting was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Beccles: Cable, Booker, Lovelock, Shade, Jones, Grimmer, Masters, Bailey, Clark, Harvey-Cooper, Bale. Subs: Waterman, Pluck, Clarke.

Tomorrow Beccles visit Mundford, kick off at 2.30pm while Bungay try to get back on track as they entertain Holt at 2.30pm.

Beccles Reserves eventually got all three points with a topsy-turvy 6-5 win at Yelverton on Saturday, and tomorrow they entertain Freethorpe at 2.30pm. Then they are at home again against Waveney Reserves on Tuesday at 7.30pm.
