Beccles Town welcomed Blofield to College Meadow for important league game and came out on top in a five goal thriller, with substitute Steven Bee scoring a late winner.

On six minutes Blofield opened the scoring when May cut inside and hit a shot that swerved at the last minute right in to the top corner.

Beccles equalised within 30 seconds when Hurren fed Clark who beat the keeper from close in.

The hosts were under pressure for the next 15 minutes or so but sound defence from Shaw and Jones and a couple of good saves from Cable kept the score level.

On 35 minutes Paul Heaney, on his return after his cycling efforts, replaced Brown and immediately stamped his authority with some fine tackles, interceptions and passes. Clark and Bailey interchanged in a good move down the left and won a corner delivered into the box by Jones where it was met by the head of Clark to score Beccles’s second goal.

Blofield started the second half with a vengeance, launching repeated attacks, ably dealt with by the Beccles defence, until they committed a foul in the area to concede a penalty which Blofield hammered over the bar.

Beccles came back into the game with a good attack when Clark set up Bishop but his shot was blocked and cleared away. Following a long run down the right Bailey was sent off, reducing Beccles to 10 men. Clark then had another great run past a couple of defenders but his final shot was just wide.

On 66 minutes Hurren who had worked hard playing with his back to goal went off and Bee came on. Beccles then suffered more pressure and the visitors equalised when Oliver was left unmarked for a simple tap-in following a goalmouth scramble. On 76 minutes Beccles hit the front when Clarke sent in a long cross which was headed strongly past a floundering keeper by Bee.

Blofield made several good attempts to get back level but the Beccles midfield and defence held strong. Hunt got knock and was replaced by Harmer who was soon in action with some superbly timed tackles and Brown came back on to replace the tiring Grimmer as the game petered out with a great three points for the Wherrymen.

Team: Cable, Hunt, Jones, Shaw, Staines, Grimmer, Brown, Bailey, Bishop, Hurren and Clark. Subs: Heaney, Bee, Harmer.

The Reserves travelled to Costessey and returned with a convincing 4-1 win despite having only 10 players (Jason Clarke 2, Kyle Godbold, Alex Husband).

Tomorrow Beccles entertain Mattishall while the Reserves travel to Bungay (both 2pm).
