Bungay draw with league leaders - but it may not be enough

The Black Dogs battled out a goalless draw with league leaders Bradenham Wanderers on Saturday to keep themselves in with an outside chance of promotion from the Anglian Combination Division One.

A draw was a fair result of a game in which neither side excelled, but which both had chances to win, with the home side going closest and having an effort disallowed for offside in added time.

Bungay started the game well, forcing Bradenham to defend, but the home side also had their moments, with Craig Hunting and Co also having to be alert to quick breaks.

Shaun Whiteman put a header over the bar from Josh Knights’ free-kick in the 28th minute, and Bradenham did similarly at the other end.

Bungay’s first real chance came in the 40th minute as Brannan Solomon and Sam Olley combined to set up Dom Mirner for a header, but he could not get power behind the effort.

Knights got in a well struck drive at the start of the second half which was straight at the keeper, and a better chance soon came their way as Solomon played Mirner in, but his shot was deflected for a corner.

Mirner found space again soon after only to fire well off target. Knights then played Luke Spear in as a defender hesitated but he was unable to get his shot in.

It was Bradenham who ended the game the stronger, however, and Rob Howes made a great reflex save to keep out one fierce shot, and soon after took a header from a corner.

Two minutes into added time the home side struck a post with an angled shot before netting in the next minute, only for the referee to disallow it after consulting the linesman.

Tomorrow Bungay entertain North Walsham (kick-off 2.30pm), in the first of three homes games in 10 days.

The Black Dogs go into the match in fifth position, a full 10 points behind second placed Bradenham, although they do have a game in hand.

It means nothing less than three points against the Angels will do if they are to stay in the hunt for promotion, and even then they would need Bradenham to slip up at Scole.

Bungay Town: R Howes, S Olley, C Hunting, S Whiteman, T Daniels, B Solomon, J Riches, N Wesby-Burrows (L Spear), M Clay, D Mirner, J Knights.
