Bungay Town upped their Anglian Combination Division Two promotion push with two wins in the space of four days – and increasing Beccles Caxton’s relegation fears in the process.

Mark Bartram and Stuart Beales’ charging Black Dogs produced a fantastic 4-3 win at promotion rivals Thetford Rovers on Saturday, and followed it up with a 2-0 win at Maltings Meadow over their struggling neighbours Beccles Caxton on Tuesday.

The six points have put Town level on points with Thetford and Attleborough Town, who are all vying for second spot behind leaders Aylsham – although both sides have a game in hand on the Black Dogs, who have now won four of their last five matches.

Leaders Aylsham head the table by 11 points but have played three games more than their rivals, while Attleborough still have to visit Maltings Meadow. But the picture is a sorry one for Beccles Caxton who, before going down to Bungay, lost 2-1 at home to Sprowston Wanderers on Saturday – one of only three sides below Caxton in the table. Beccles are now just one point off the likely drop zone and on a seemingly unending run of 13 successive league defeats.

Two first class finishes by striker Dan Andrews were enough for Bungay to grab their first double of the season in a well contested derby at Maltings Meadow on Tuesday evening.

In front of a good crowd Bungay had significantly more of the ball but Caxton proved a hard to break down until the second half.

After some decent chances, Bungay finally went ahead in the 53rd minute as Matt James supplied the opening for Andrews to finish with a confident shot. The home side were dominant at this stage and a flick from Andrews from a low cross from York was grabbed on the line.

The vital second goal came with 14 minutes left as John Riches found Andrews and his speed took him past the defender to lash past the advancing Downing.

But arguably, Town’s win at Thetford could prove more pivotal, as Tom York and Riches grabbed a brace each to record a significant victory against their promotion rivals on Saturday.

There was little to choose between the sides in a generally entertaining game but an unchanged Town took their chances well.

York drilled home on seven minutes before Rovers equalised through Craig Skipp from 25 yards.

Bungay regained the lead just before the break through Riches’ glancing header and it got even better when he got the final touch in a crowded six-yard box soon after the interval.

It was 3-2 on the hour as Kamren Senior ran at the Bungay defence, taking the ball round Shaw to score.

But Bungay regained their two-goal advantage within a minute as York got up well to head home James Youngman’s long cross.

Andrews could have made it 5-2 but pulled his shot wide after racing past two defenders, and with 15 minutes left Thetford pulled one back as Danny Foster got down the left and beat Shaw with a well judged lob.

But Bungay held out comfortably for a valuable win.

Tomorrow sees Bungay visit Foulsham, who sit just below them in the table, while Caxton travel to sixth-placed Mundford desperate to end their horrid run.

IT was celebrations all round for bowlers from Thurlton and Aldeby this weekend at the county finals held in Ipswich.

Thurlton started the day with Kirsty Clarke and Shaun Cook winning the mixed pairs in great style, Kirsty, as always, led consistently well and Shaun as skip, doing whatever was asked of him to produce a great win over two very experienced bowlers from Norbridge.
