Bungay’s Andrew Gilding bowed out of the William Hill PDC World Championship last night after an emphatic defeat at the hands of former champion Adrian Lewis.

Gilding won only two legs as Lewis surged to a 4-0 victory in double-quick time at the Alexandra Palace.

Lewis opened the match with a maximum before adding another 180 in the opening leg, which he won in 11 darts. He then added a third 180 before taking out 84 on the bull and made it four maximums in three legs as he quickly sealed the set, taking out 60.

Lewis fired in another 180 at the start of the second set but Gilding managed to get a leg on the board by taking out 80. Lewis landed tops in each of the next two legs and pinned double ten to take the set after adding his sixth 180.

The two-time world champion pinned double four to move ahead in set three before a seventh 180 helped him break Gilding’s throw. The underdog took out 46 to pull a leg back but Lewis took out 80 to move within a set of victory.

The end was in sight when Lewis took out 25 to break in the fourth set. he then finished on a tops to take the second leg and finished the job on double 14 after adding an eighth 180.

In the next match on another Suffolk-based player, Peter Wright, had a much easier time of it as he cruised past Belgium’s Ronny Huybrechts 4-0.

The man from Mendham was in impressive form as he moved 3-0 ahead, dropping just two legs as he took a vice-like grip on proceedings.

It was much tighter in the fourth set, which went a deciding leg, but Wright got the job done, taking out 96 on double 19 for a commanding victory.

Other results: Alan Norris (Eng) bt Joe Murnan (Eng) 4-1, Mark Webster (Wal) bt Terry Jenkins (Eng) 4-0, Mensur Suljovic (Aut) bt David Pallett (Eng) 4-3.
