Norwich City’s out-of-favour striker Gary Hooper has completed his transfer move to Championship club Sheffield Wednesday.

Hooper has joined the Yorkshire promotion hopefuls for an undisclosed fee, penning a three-and-a-half year deal, and becomes the third fringe player to leave the Canaries in this window, following the departures of Lewis Grabban and Elliott Bennett.

The 27-year-old frontman scored six goals in 13 appearances during a successful recent loan stint at Hillsborough, and Owls’ head coach Carlos Carvahal had labelled Hooper his primary January target.

Hooper is eligible for his new club’s Championship trip to Reading on Saturday after completing the move in time to feature for the Owls.

City counterpart Alex Neil made it clear on Friday morning a deal was close to completion.

“Negotiations are on-going but I don’t think we are far away. He has been back in here the last day or so, so I have spoken to him,” said Neil, at Colney.

Hooper spent two-and-half-years at the Canaries after arriving in a reported £5.5m deal from Celtic but never established himself as a frontline option under Chris Hughton, Neil Adams or Neil. Hooper made just two Premier League appearances for Norwich this season with his last first team outing coming as an 89th minute substitute in the 3-0 Premier League defeat at Southampton on August 30.

  • Stew, to some extent I agree but quite frankly I could never see Hooper or Lafferty making it. Both of them had their prolific period playing for the Old Firm. Playing for Rangers when they were good even let McCoist look like a good striker, well almost. PL here is several steps up. SPL to Championship is like the jump from O Levels to A Levels (yes, showing my age), Championship to PL is like A Levels to Oxbridge, yes some people can do it but many can't. I'm afraid that in my opinion Hooper and Lafferty are more or less honest, hard working ( at least Lafferty) journeymen who will make a good living but simply aren't good enough for the PL. One a mistake by the country vicar and the other a mistake by NA.

  • Houghton the chap who manage brighten, he seem too be doing OK at the moment, perhaps he should have been given more time at Norwich, always seems that one manager goes down the swany gets sacked, in comes a new face, does the business for a couple of seasons, goes down the swany gets sacked and in comes a new one, bit liked Norwich with strikers.

The problem with Norfolk folk is that 'we do things different'….Foreign people with foreign names have been inflicted upon us!….If it were not for Rudd, these parts would be bereft of locals!….I think Trev 57 was referring to 'ootin', and had an 'o' where he should have had a 'oole'!….Having said that, he is spot on with his mix and match team selection!….Could be that booth 'ootin ' and Axle had\have too many players at their disposal ,so picked their teams from their 'favourites bag'….What the devil has team work got to do with anything!…..

  • You lot on here make me laugh with your premier league quality and championship quality, all this he's not premier league quality bit when the team you all actually support are a good championship side but a poor premier side, don't try and kid yourselves Norwich do not have the funds to be a good premier league side or have a big enough name to attract good premier quality players, the thing is with the way this manager just like Houghton keeps chopping and changing, you will never really know whether both Lafferty and Hooper would have been successfull or not, from what I've seen of Norwich so far this season it's not poor quality strikers but lack of creativity, Norwich do not seem to have much in the way of flair about them, no outstanding individuals, years ago when I used to be a regular at carrow road they always had the odd player who could pull out the odd rabbit, where have they all gone, I suppose that's another one of life's little mysteries.

Just thought that Whittaker has slipped down the pecking order so could be shipped out, Russell Martin should be shipped out to ensure Alex doesn't let sentiment rule and play him at centreback again and Andrieu would probably be welcomed back at The Accies. As many have said, maybe our scouting really is the issue in terms of identifying players that would really fit into our managers style of play. I guess it is easy to identify players who are performing at their current club, but will they perform within the "game plan" being executed at NCFC. A bit like picking stocks on how they performed in the last 3 months.

I think we paid over the odds for him. As you indicate, the fact no other Premiership club has come in for him is a good indication that in the game he is not regarded as Premiership quality. In fact, I may be wrong but I don't recall any other Club then in the Premier coming in for him when he was at Celtic. Superholt's goal tally dropped from 17 to 8 just like that. (All competitions). Cameron has been unlucky. His wonder-strike vs Crystal Palace was wiped off by a clown in ref's clothing. Jack Butland was brilliant for Stoke (as is his wont). Strikers need confidence as well as service. Both are lacking atm. But things can get better. What a difference a few wins make. Is Jamar Loza out on loan again? As you hint, there may be room for just one decent striker before the window slams shut... Or will we create a new goalscoring threat by combining Naismith with MBokani or Jerome? Boring statistic: Our 24 league goals this season have come from 11 different players. Nates & Howson are joint top hitmen with 4 each. Incidentally, we are only 2 goals short of the total scored in the Hughton\adams relegation season - with 16 games to go. In any case, for me Lafferty, Grabban and Hooper at best are decent Championship strikers. I have found it strange how many people want them to play (mainly Lafferty) when they have hardly lit up the place. Last season Jerome scored 20 and Grabban played his part. Yes, Lafferty had a good run in the euro qualifiers, but look who he was scoring against. Anyway, I am happy to see them all leave, Hooper has looked portly, Grabban has been a pain in the backside and for me, Laferty isn't Premiership quality all though I respect that he has tried to stay and fight for his place in the team. However Hughton never played with more than one striker anyway so was he bought as cover for Ricky? Never subsequently given a chance by City. Last season he started looking a couple of stone overweight and went off to the Ryder cup one match weekend. What was that all about? Anyway good luck Gary and I guess Wedbesday are getting a bargain.

  • Interesting that according to BBC Sport website, we are the busiest team in the transfer market this 'window'. That's a nice change. I have a feeling that there will be a couple more outs, not including Gary Hooper, and one more in - a quality striker? Happy with the signings so far. Noticed that Becchio has re-joined Rotherham.

  • I still think he could have made it as a Premiership striker had he only been given a run in the team. When we first signed him he look streets better than Rip Van Winkle but the latter was given far more starts. As I have stated earlier, Hooper needs a few games to get match fit but we were never prepared to give him that chance. It is more than possible that we will face him next season, hopefully in the Premiership, who would then lay odds that he will not score against us. However, if this deal goes through I wish him all the best and hope that we find another striker if we also intend to sell Lafferty.

  • I have never understood this, he looked like a good buy and seems to be the sort of finisher that we need but there must be a good reason that he is not being picked. If he does not feature in the manager's plans then it is best for everyone that he moves on. Our manager is still on a learning curve and keeps adapting and improving. This transfer window has been much better than the last one, long may it continue. Now can we put more steel into the team's resolve when we go one down, please Alex.

  • Real shame we didn't see his Celtic form, confidence and consistency in a Norwich shirt. I wish him well. I'm sure he'll ensure Wednesday will remain in the top 6. Have also just read we're interested in a loan deal for Bamford. If he's seriously on the radar, quite frankly I'd rather see Lafferty get a fair crack instead. It's Mbokani all the way for me though OTBC

  • He scored an absolutely fabulous goal away at Rotherham, just outside the penalty area, left side, volley, the ball went up then down, the best I think he scored for us, what a goal and right in front of the traveling fans. I liked him, always smiling, good team player, but as a few have pointed out, not quite prem. quality. I wish him well.

  • Jorobit - none of those mentioned were good enough. So why should we bother to pay their wages. them not being here frees up space to bring in new players. We have made 2 huge statements of intent already in this window so not certain on the negativity.
