A tribute concert to a stalwart of a village band is to be held in this weekend.

On Saturday, the Loddon Band will perform a concert in Holy Trinity Church, in the memory of Ron Hinton, life president of the band.

Mr Hinton, who taught science at Hobart High School for more than 20 years and revived the Loddon Band, died in March of this year, and the concert is the band’s way of paying tribute to a man who gave so much to it.

The concert will also see items from members of Mr Hinton’s family, as well as musical performances from the band.

Mike Cadman, honorary secretary of the band, said: “Ron was really a legend in his own lifetime and was hugely respected by many people for his integrity, and some of his protégés still play for the band, including the musical director, Joseph Knight.

“Any former members of the band are welcome to play on the night, some are already coming, so it should be a splendid and fitting occasion.”

Mr Hinton continued to play for the Loddon Band until around five years ago, when he suffered a stroke. He eventually went on to live with his daughter in Hampshire, before dying at the age of 94 on Friday, March 17.

Prior to moving to Brockenhurst in Hampshire, he lived in Ditchingham.

He revived the Loddon Band in the late 1960s, after discovering the instruments of the original band at the school, which was then known as Loddon Secondary Modern School.

The concert will also see another of Mr Hinton’s former pupils joining the band - Simon Linger - who will be acting as conductor on the night.

The event is free to attend, with attendees able to show up on the door, with a retiring collection being sent around.

The band will perform a selection of Mr Hinton’s favourite pieces of music, as they celebrate his time as both life president of the band, and its musical director.

The concert will be held on Saturday, September 9 from 7.30pm at Holy Trinity Church, Church Plain, Loddon.
