A BECCLES resident of 70 years and an ex-standard bearer of the town's women's branch of the Royal British Legion celebrated her 100th birthday this week.

Lily Wigg, who now lives in sheltered accommodation at Hildesley Court in Pakefield, celebrated her birthday on Wednesday with her family at the Carlton Manor Hotel and will also be celebrating with friends at a party today.

Mrs Wigg was born in Swainsthorpe and lived in a number of local towns and villages such as Loddon, Toft Monks and Ellingham as a child before moving to St Georges Road in 1933.

In 1992 Mrs Wigg received a Royal British Legion award for 40 years of service to Suffolk County and Beccles, where she was secretary of the branch.

Len Jones, a member of the Beccles branch of the Royal British Legion and chairman until 2003, said: “She supported the local branch in all its activities, and even after moving to Hildesley Court she still travelled to Beccles to take part in branch activities. She's that kind of woman.”

Mrs Wigg was also involved with the Second Beccles Sea Scouts for a similar period and was awarded the Thanks Badge by the group. She was also a member of the Town's Women's Guild and Woman's Institute, and was involved with St Luke's Church.
