A medieval spectacular will take visitors back to the 14th Century at Bungay Castle this weekend.

The event, which has been organised by the Bungay Festival Committee as a pre-festival event, will include demonstrations, archery and a working medieval field kitchen.

The living history weekend will be led by NANMA - the Norfolk and Norwich Medieval Association - and will be held in front of the castle.

The group has researched and recreated the lives of people in the 14th Century across a broad spectrum of social levels, from peasants to knights and craftsmen to friars.

The weekend will include demonstrations of slinging, chainmail making, illumination and calligraphy, weaving, armour and weaponry, an archery display, braiding and a bill drill display.

Visitors will be able to test their prowess with the long bow and try writing with a quill, while the children can take part in a jousting competition.

There will also be an array of crafts and a working medieval field kitchen for visitors to savour the smells of medieval cooking.

Keith Parker, chairman of the Bungay Festival Committee, said: “This promises to be an exciting and educational weekend which will incorporate everyday life and skills from the 14th Century, as well as combat displays and knights in armour.

“It should be particularly interesting as there will be the opportunity for hands-on participation.

“We are grateful to Bungay Chamber of Trade who have offered financial support that will enable us to make the event free to attend.”

The event will run from 10am to 5pm tomorrow and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.

This year’s Bungay Festival will take place from July 12 to July 27.
