Some people wake up on New Year's Day feeling a bit tender after the night before or making sure they follow their resolutions.

However, for promising 14-year-old golfer Issy McDonald New Year’s Day saw the teenager hit her first ever hole in one as her dream of playing the sport at a high level continued.

Issy hit the hole in one at Bungay and Waveney Valley Golf Club.

Her feat at the twelfth hole on January 1 happened during the Captain’s Drive in Texas Scramble at the club, a traditional News Year's Day event open to all members.

She was using a five iron club in a tricky crosswind when she bagged her first ace while partnering with her dad, James.

Issy said: “I knew it was close, the ball hovered on the edge of the hole for what seemed like an eternity, I didn’t realize it had gone in until other golfers close by started celebrating.”

Her proud dad said: “It’s brilliant for Issy to get a hole in one so soon into her golfing journey, it puts her level with me now, it only took me 30 years."

Issy's current handicap is 13.8.

She has been playing since she was eight and is developing into a promising golfer.

Last year Issy was selected to be part of the Suffolk Girls development squad and the junior golfer hopes to one day represent the county.

She is under the supervision of the club professional Chris Potter and his team who put in countless hours into the club's junior section.

The club was founded in 1889 and is a classic James Braid design.

The Bungay course has 18 holes and is mainly heathland, rising and falling gently, though there is the odd ravine for golfers to negotiate.
