An angling club says it is delighted to open a new fishery lake to its members.

The new lake is in Gillingham near the Dunburgh stretch of the River Waveney and Cherry Tree Angling Club is now working to clear the area nearby for members.

Based near Beccles, the lake has 20 fishing platforms and otter proof-fencing.

Orchard Lake 1 is now the club's fourth still-water fishery after Ellingham Hall Lake, Lay-by Pit and Common Pond.

Club chairman Glenn Shiplee said: "We have been looking for new waters for some time now as during the last few years we have lost some fishing venues.

"So we are delighted to announce that we have the lease of this new lake.

"It is brilliant news for the club, and I owe a lot of thanks to Mr and Mrs Morton, who own the land.

"They have been really helpful and enthusiastic about the project and their support has been great."

The angling club secured the area in October and has been working hard to get it ready for members.

"With the help of members and the owners of the water we have built 20 fishing platforms and installed 350m of otter-proof fencing around the water.

"The existing stock of roach, perch and eels has been supplemented with stockings of small tench, together with some bream and carp.

"We netted the lake for pike which have been moved to other non-club waters.

"We want it to be an all round fishery," Mr Shiplee said.

Cherry Tree Angling Club is working to clear the stretch adjacent to the pond.

Mr Shiplee said: "We are currently working to clear the river stretch adjacent to our new Orchard lake 1, and nearby there is another lake which is a work in progress.

"We intend to place platforms along the bank of both waters, once it is cleared.

"But this will be announced as and when."
