Have you ever wanted to help shape the future of Beccles and play a key role in making it a better place to live and work in?

People who are interested in getting more involved in the town can have the opportunity in May when all 16 Beccles Town Council seats will be up for election.

The town council is providing a special event for residents to find out about what the role involves, how the council operates and the timescale and process for the elections.

The event will be at the town hall on Wednesday, March 1, between 6pm and 7pm.

After the mayor and town clerk have spoken, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and meet some of the current councillors.

Barry Darch, councillor and mayor of Beccles, said: "I think it’s important that councillors are representative of the community and that councillors as a team have a range of
experiences and backgrounds, including employment status, age and gender.

"Being a councillor is a wonderful opportunity to give something back to our town as well as to learn and share experiences and perspectives.

"In addition to the usual kinds of responsibilities that town councils have, Beccles Town Council is responsible for the Fenland Charity Trust, so the role has an extra dimension that is both interesting and worthwhile."

In October, a vote was held to replace the Rigbourne ward vacancy, with 75-year-old Chris Greenhill triumphing after two rounds of voting.

Information on the training opportunities for councillors will also be available.
