A town's new sign has been removed following vandalism, which many say had in fact "improved" it.

Bungay Town Council posted on social media to reveal the town's two new welcome signs on June 26.

One sign was placed on Hillside Road West to greet drivers arriving from Flixton, and another was placed on Earsham Dam to greet drivers from Earsham.

However, the sign on the road into Bungay from Earsham has been removed following its defacement, with a picture of the infamous Black Shuck dog and the words "A peculiar old town" added to it.

A Bungay Town Council spokesperson said: "The town sign at the bridge in Earsham Street has been removed due to vandalism.

"These signs were replacements for the original town signs that had become damaged.

"They were funded through a grant obtained by the town council from East Suffolk Council.

"Both signs were designed following the guidelines supplied by a brand design agency that worked closely with several organisations in the town including both the town council and the district council.

"Bungay Town Council condemn any form of vandalism in the town."

The town council didn't comment on how much the sign cost.

Didy Ward, chairman of Bungay Events and Business Association (BEBA), had worked with the town council when they agreed to change the old sign and believed the vandalism had actually "improved" it.

She said: "I think the vandals, by putting the black dog on the sign, had actually made an improvement to it, they have tried to make it very modern.

“Bungay is full of character and there was no character in those new signs at all, they didn't say anything about the town's culture.

“Maybe, hopefully, they have taken the sign away to redo it and make it nicer to better represent the town."

Many other people commented on social media that they preferred the vandalised sign.
