The theatre responsible for commissioning the controversial street art on buildings in a town centre conservation zone is working to "resolve the issue".

The Fisher Theatre in Bungay says it is working with East Suffolk Council over its commissioning of internationally known street artist Vinnie Nylon.

He created street art across the town in its conservation area last week which attracted the attention of East Suffolk Council conservation officers.

The street art was supposed to be a free gift from the artist to the town and a means of promoting his exhibition at the theatre on September 17.

A statement on behalf of the theatre said: "Vinnie Nylon, an internationally known Suffolk-based artist, was commissioned earlier this year to put on an exhibition of his artwork at the Fisher Gallery this September and, as part of this show, he offered to paint, free of charge, a number of temporary murals in Bungay.

"Discussions were held with Bungay Town Council about this, which voted at full council to support the Fisher Theatre in principle with these murals.

"Various sites around the town were then identified and the council agreed to help us in getting the relevant permissions.

"Time constraints meant that it was impossible to get the requisite permissions in place for this project to coincide with the Fisher Theatre exhibition.

"At this point, the town council decided to step back.

"The Fisher Theatre is currently in ongoing discussion with East Suffolk Council to resolve this issue."

The district council - which is responsible for approving major changes to buildings in the area - said it had not been approached to allow the works to go ahead.

It is investigating the issue.
