A town council has agreed a special measure to ensure a banking giant leaving Beccles' high street has a presence after its branch officially closes.

Beccles Town Council has agreed to offer Barclays a temporary space in November and December.

The move comes as the town's New Market branch officially closes its doors on November 24.

A town council meeting heard that Barclays has been in discussion with Beccles Library about renting a room to operate from for 24 hours per week over four days.

However, with the library currently under refurbishment until the new year, the town council has delegated authority to its clerk to find a suitable location for November and December to rent Barclays a room to operate.

This is the council's plan should the library not be able to offer Barclays a room to operate in its temporary building, which ironically is the former HSBC branch in Sheepgate.

The council voted in favour of this proposal, and with Barclays closing in a matter of weeks, it is yet to be confirmed where the room leased for the bank will be.

Barclays ruled out the Waveney Centre as a possible location as it was not a "practical option" and preferred the library.
