A town council has outlined four locations where cameras used to help catch criminals and speeding drivers could be placed.

Beccles Town Council is to apply to take part in a Suffolk County Council scheme which pays for Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras to be put in key areas now it has decided on suitable locations for them.

The cameras can be used to track speeders and criminals suspected of offences from driving without insurance to murder.

They read and digitalize vehicles' number plates in real-time and alert police forces around the country if a vehicle linked to a suspect drives past any ANPR camera.

The first location was outside the Common Club on London Road going on to Hungate, while the second location outlined was on St Marys Road, near to the Beccles War Memorial.

A third position identified for an ANPR camera to go was on the B1062, Bungay Road.

While a fourth location chosen for the cameras was Ellough Road, near to the primary school.

With the locations for the cameras now confirmed, the town council is in the process of completing its application to Suffolk County Council to join the scheme.

The cameras which the scheme offers are mobile ones, so therefore can be moved accordingly if necessary.

The funding will be entirely provided by Suffolk County Council if Beccles Town Council's application is successful.

Suffolk County Council, in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner and Suffolk Constabulary, plan to be trialling the use of ANPR cameras to tackle speeding hot spots across the county.

It is part of their wider plan to tackle crime and help detect and deter speeding offences that have been highlighted in towns and villages.
