Life at Bungay Sea Scouts revealed in book No Throwing Apples

Those questions have been answered thanks to a new book put together by three leaders of the 1st Bungay Sea Scouts.

Peter Jermy, Graham Pritchard and Gary Fenn joined the group as boys and graduated through the ranks together.

They have a combined experience of nearly 150 years of activities with the group, which was formed at the former Bungay Secondary Modern School in 1947 and is based at the boathouse at The Staithe.

Now they have written down many of their memories, anecdotes, crises and dramas in the book No Throwing Apples, which will be launched at Bungay Library on December 9.

The many stories of camps and scout meetings, locally and nationally, will bring a smile and a chuckle to the faces of anyone who reads it - and that is its aim.

Mr Pritchard said: “Through 46 years of being scout leaders we wanted scouts to have fun, like we had growing up in the fifties and sixties – times that were carefree and worry-free.

“We love Bungay and the Waveney Valley, and we thought of the shows and the stories we’ve generated along the way.

“The tales we’ve told in this book are to make people smile. Everything is light-hearted and humorous.”

The book is mainly the memories of the leaders, who have each done 46 years as scout leaders, with Mr Pritchard's wife Anne editing it and Matthew Jermy doing the layout

As to the title, people have to read the book to discover its significance.

The launch is at the library on Saturday, December 9, from 11am-1pm, when the three leaders will be there to sign copies, which cost £9.95. All proceeds will go to the 1st Bungay Sea Scouts.
