If you're in the centre of Beccles and want to know the time then the town's clock won't be of any use in helping you know which hour it is.

Maintenance works are being carried out on the clock at the Beccles Bell Tower from Tuesday, February 13 to Friday, February 16.

Due to the work its clock and bells will not be working.

The tower, which stands just shy of 97 feet, (30 metres), is by St Michael's Church in the town centre and is owned by East Suffolk Council.

An East Suffolk Council statement said: "Due to planned maintenance work, the clock within Beccles Bell Tower will not be functioning from Tuesday 13 February to Friday 16 February.

"The work will involve the removal, repair and reinstallation of the bevel gears. During this work, the clock and the bells will not be operational.

"All the work will take place inside the tower and therefore there will not be any disruption to pedestrians or road users."

It comes after the flagpole on the tower was deemed unsafe by East Suffolk Council after an inspection.

As a result of the inspection, the council has advised Beccles Town Council that no flag should be run up the pole under any circumstances.

A new flagpole will be installed in the spring to replace it on the tower.

The inspection determined that the flagpole was old, its overall condition was poor, and it was considered it needed to be replaced together with a set of new guy wires.

It also noted that there was surface damage at the base of the flagpole which made it a health hazard too.
