Safety calls for Loddon roundabout on the A146 after crashes

It was the third crash in as many weeks at the Loddon roundabout which was built two years ago on the A146 by St George's Park.

Police were at the scene of the incident which happened yesterday morning on the A146 in Loddon and the road was cleared by the afternoon. 

Pictures showed a car on its side close to the roundabout with Mundham Road and George Lane. 

There were delays in the area and the extent of any injuries is not yet known.

Kay Mason Billig, leader of Norfolk County Council and a Loddon district councillor, said that only "recently" has the situation worsened at the roundabout.

She said: "I use this roundabout on an almost daily basis, and I have witnessed the aftermath of the recent incidents, where cars have left the road at the roundabout when travelling towards Norwich.

"This roundabout has been open for over two years and we have not had any major incidents until recently.

"In fact, local people have commented that the design of the Loddon roundabout seemed better than the one at Hales.

"When the signs on the roundabout were damaged after the first crash, I asked highways to install some temporary ones, as new signage can take six weeks to arrive and new permanent signage have been ordered.

"Highways engineers immediately put temporary road signs up but there were a further two incidents at the roundabout shortly afterwards.

"I have contacted the police to find out if the drivers of those vehicles have been interviewed and if there is a common theme as to why they left the road, I am awaiting a response.

"I have also asked highways to look again at the signage on the roundabout and the approach, to see if we can improve this from a safety perspective."
