'No obvious cause' for crashes at A146 Loddon roundabout

Since January, more than four car crashes have been reported at the A146 Loddon roundabout, the most recent happening on March 14. 

The accidents prompted Kay Mason Billig, leader of Norfolk County Council and a Loddon district councillor, to launch an investigation into the "worsening" situation.

But Ms Billig has since found from working with the police that there is "no obvious common denominator" for the crashes. 

She said: "The reasons range from fell asleep at the wheel, didn't see it, going too fast, failed to notice the roundabout signs so didn't anticipate a roundabout, you get the picture.

"There was some low-lying fog on two of the occasions so visibility would have been impaired but then drivers should have been going more slowly in those conditions.

"And the road signage was lit properly at the time of the accidents and they are plenty big enough to see at night."

Despite there being no common link between the crashes, Ms Billig said she would try and introduce extra safety measures at the troubled junction with the help of the council's highways teams. 

She suggested more lights on the signs and rumble strips coming up to the roundabout could be introduced to reduce the likelihood of further accidents.
