A restaurant building forced to close after it was hit by a major fire could see further structural engineering work carried out on it.

The former Graze at the White Horse site at the White Horse in New Market, Beccles, is set to undergo further restoration work after a blaze broke out last year.

A proposal to reinstate fire-damaged elements of the building was previously approved by East Suffolk Council, but the business remained closed.

And now a fresh planning bid for the building has gone in by owners Elizabeth Holdings.

The listed building consent application said: "Additional works have been identified following stripping out works, due to a review of fire escape issues, repairs identified by a structural engineer".

Proposed work includes replacement of damaged fire doors, redecoration to the exterior of the building, and lining part of the ceiling of the yard entrance with fire resisting board to protect the fire escape flat roof above.

The building is understood "to have been The White Horse Inn since around 1760 and was probably originally used as a saddlers workshop," documents added.

The fire broke out in March 2025 and saw several fire crews from Norfolk and Suffolk respond to tackle the incident.

Police had closed Ballygate and New Market while advising members of the public to avoid the area.

Graze Owners Steve and Joy Hoy announced in October 2025 that it would remain closed.

Mrs Hoy had said: "It is with deep sadness that myself and Steve have decided not to reopen Graze as a business."

"The loss of all our fantastic staff who have moved onto pastures new would be impossible to replace to the standards we had" she added.

After the fire an online fundraiser was launched to support the Hoys and managed to exceed its goal of £1,000 just one week after it was started.

The bid for the repair work will be considered by East Suffolk Council.
