SUFFOLK Police are advising homeowners to take simple steps to keep their properties safe as the evenings draw in.They are warning that criminals can take advantage of the darker evenings and worsening weather, and giving the following tips on preventative measures ahead of the clocks going back next Sunday.

Always keep doors and windows locked, and keep outbuildings secure.

Sheds and garages can also be protected with a battery-operated security alarm. Fix mesh or bars on the inside of shed or garage windows to deter criminals from breaking in.

Never hide a spare key somewhere outside the property as a burglar will know where to look.

Keep vehicles in secure garages where available, or parked in a well-lit area.

Security mark your valuables with your postcode and house number and take photos of them.

Consider installing security lights to deter thieves - ones which react to failing natural light are recommended, and timer lights and radios

Lock gates as well as buildings and consider using gravel on the drive to deter criminals.
