An annual tradition is being revived in Halesworth next week.

For the first time in a number of years the town will host a pancake race on Shrove Tuesday, February 17.

The action will take place in Halesworth Market Place starting at 10.30am.

Polly Webb of Tilly’s Restaurant in Market Place, Halesworth, is one of the organisers and hopes to see plenty of spectators enjoying the fun.

She said: “Local businesses in the Halesworth Market Place are joining together to resurrect the old pancake race to raise money for the local volunteer centre.

“We are inviting everyone to come along and cheer on the teams.”

The competitors face a difficult task in completing the course.

Ms Webb added: “Competitors will be racing round a handicap course set out in the Market Place.

“This will include a two flip stop, a water jump and finishing with a triple hop.”

Team members and spectators can also enjoy a range of sweet and savoury pancakes being served at Tilly’s of Halesworth during the day.

Meanwhile, a few miles away competitors are at the ready for this year’s annual Pancake Day Race at Lowestoft.

The fun starts on Tuesday at noon outside Beales department store in the pedestrianised town centre.

A record number of 20 teams have entered the race and are currently practicing their flipping techniques as they compete to be crowned pancake race champions 2015.

The event is being organised by Lowestoft Vision who have also included a mascot race for the second consecutive year. Last year’s winner the Access Healthy Heart is unable to defend his crown leaving the door open for the likes of Woody bear, Freddie the Frog, the Beach Bunny and Lowestoft mascot Kipper.

The main event consists of teams of three competing in a short relay race, running with a pancake in a frying pan which has to be tossed at various points along the course.

Judges are on hand to ensure fair play at all times and to make sure anyone dropping the pancake starts again.

Darren Newman Lowestoft BID Manager said: “The Pancake day race has always been a great fun event for all those who take part.

“It may be friendly but the teams always get competitive which is great for the crowd”.
