After ‘one of Bungay’s most loved institutions’ was cancelled due to coronavirus, the annual duck race is back with a twist.

The annual event which sees rubber ducks race along the River Waveney with top prizes on the line was due to be held on the weekend of July 11-12, but was cancelled due to coronavirus.

However after receiving dozens of messages of support from supporters in Bungay, the event organisers decided they could not let anything get in the way of the race.

Having been held every summer since 2015 at Falcon Meadow, the Bungay Duck Race has each year raised money to pay for the area to belong to the town.

Laura Myatt, who has organised this year’s event with her husband Allan, said: “It’s a silly event but people take it into their hearts.

“People were just sad as so much has been cancelled this summer, and we wouldn’t be able to gather people on the river.”

However, the duck race organisers have found an ingenious way to keep the tradition going, which has been revealed in a teaser trailer.

Promising “all of the ducks” and “none of the danger”, the 2020 duck race will be entirely virtual.

Mrs Myatt explained: “People can buy a duck ticket online and on a date we will not reveal, we will take all of the ducks bought and have a closed-doors race at the river. We will film it and stream it later on after we add ridiculous 1970s football punditry style commentary.

“It’s really captured people’s imaginations. People are donating out of sentiment and many are happy we’re trying to do something.”

This year, however, commercial ducks will not be allowed in the race.

“Normally businesses in Bungay sponsor a duck,” Mrs Myatt said. “We didn’t want to ask this year as it has been tough for businesses, but many have said they’re glad we’re doing it and donated anyway.”

The duck race hopes to raise the final £800 of the £50,000 spent on Falcon Meadow for Bungay, and tickets can be bought until August 9 here.
