Beccles will be illuminated with festive cheer tonight as the town’s Christmas lights are switched on.
The evening will be hosted by Heart Radio Breakfast presenter Dave Taylor, who will be on stage in Market Square from 5.30pm. And the lights will be turned on at 6pm, with help from cast members from the town’s pantomime Aladdin.
There will be a variety of stalls, live music, street food, Stocks Funfair, live reindeer and children are invited to visit Santa Claus in his grotto at St Michael’s Church tower. There is free parking in Beccles after 4pm at all Waveney District Council car parks.
The evening will also see the winner of the Beccles Best Dressed Christmas Window announced live on stage and the launch of this year’s Beccles Christmas Tree Trail. Fifty-eight shops and businesses will be participating and each tree will have a letter displayed on it. For more details about the trail visit www.beccleschristmaslights.co.uk
The star will shine on top of St Mary’s Church in Bungay this weekend to mark the beginning of the festive season.
The Christmas lights switch on event runs from 4pm to 6pm tomorrow, with mince pies and mulled wine served inside the church after the traditional star ceremony takes place at 4.30pm. A small service will be held in the churchyard, or inside if it is raining, welcoming the start of Advent.
Over at the Butter Cross, The X Men will be performing and there will be plenty of food stalls to choose from along with mulled wine.
At 6pm the main town lights will be switched on and the bells at St Mary’s will ring out.
Shops will be open and it is hoped the characters from the Fisher Theatre’s pantomime Robin Hood will be there to meet and greet families.
Didy Ward, one of the organisers from the Bungay Events and Business Association said: “It promises to be a really fun evening with lots to see and do.”
Over in Halesworth, the Christmas lights will also be turned on tomorrow along with a festive procession led by Santa.
Entertainment will begin at 2.30pm with some dancing in the town centre and a performance by the Festival Voices.
Santa will be getting in his sleigh at Halesworth Library at around 4pm and will be led through the Thoroughfare by the Royal British Legion Band from Leiston.
The procession will stop close to Durrants Estate Agents where speeches will be given and a blessing by the Rev Jan Cundy, before the festive lights are turned on at 4.15pm by the winner of the scarecrow treasure hunt competition.
In the Market Place, there will be a barbecue, live music, a comedian and Santa will be in his grotto at St Mary’s Church.
There will be two hours free parking in all Halesworth car parks from 4pm.
