Armed police were called to Beccles after reports of a man with a firearm.
Suffolk Police received reports of a man with some type of firearm in the Beccles area, and dispatched a firearms unit at 2.50pm.
Initial enquiries were made by the squad, but they were unable to locate the man.
The police said that enquiries are ongoing to try and identify the man, but that the firearm squad had been stood down.
Witnesses on Facebook said that they witnessed unmarked police cars and police vans and cars driving with sirens off down Blyburgate in the town.

Paul Eaton said: “There’s been 3 BMW police cars (marked) lights going no sirens and a unmarked black focus st, lights on and no siren. Officers in black and black hats on.”
Mark Cullen added: “I saw a police van with the unmarked black Focus behind it too, lights on but no sirens. I spotted the latter going down Blyburgate first then coming up from it again behind the police van.”
