A charity baker is preparing for his 10th Armed Forces Day fundraiser as he looks towards the £100,000 milestone.
David Brown, of Burgh St Peter, held his first event for Help for Heroes in his back garden in 2009, with his late wife Pat busy baking in the kitchen.
The couple were inspired to raise funds for the charity by their daughter Sally Williams, who served in the army for 24 years.
And after Pat unexpectedly passed away in March 2016, just missing them reach the £50,000 milestone that July, Mr Brown vowed to continue fundraising in his wife’s honour.
The couple’s first Armed Forces Day event, where they sold their homemade cakes and chutneys, raised £346 for the cause.
Mr Brown, 75, said: “At the end of the day Pat said to me ‘this was good, we can do another one next year’, so we did and it has just snowballed from there. We started getting people complaining that they could only get our cakes and chutneys once a year.”
After that Mr Brown held stalls throughout the year in Beccles town centre, and still holds them most months in Exchange Square.
He said: “I debated packing up when I lost Pat, but Sally said mum would want you to carry on.
“It was Pat’s dearest wish that we reached £50,000 and now I’ve got to make £100,000.”
The event started out with neighbours from the village popping by, but now people travel from Beccles and the surrounding villages.
And to date, Mr Brown has raised £74,360 for Help for Heroes.
He said: “When we first started we never thought we get this far and I know Pat didn’t either.
“The support we have had from villagers, businesses and the generous people who support our stalls is incredible.
“I feel really proud.”
Mr Brown’s home will be open from 8am to 2.30pm to mark this year’s Armed Forces Day on Saturday, June 30, at The Owls, Mill Road, Burgh St Peter, NR34 0BA.
Everyone is welcome to attend and as well as homemade cakes, savouries and chutneys, there will also be a tea tent and raffle.
Mr Brown will be helped on the day by family and friends, and anyone wishing to donate a raffle prize can contact him on 01502 677225.
He will also be running a stall at Sotterley County Fair this Sunday, June 24.
