Yarmouth and Waveney is doing better than anywhere else in the region at tackling hospital-related superbugs like MRSA and C difficile.

The verdict has come from the region's strategic health authority, and praises the efforts of Yarmouth and Waveney primary care trust (PCT) and the James Paget University Hospital in Gorleston.

There have been two cases of MRSA in the area since the beginning of April, and 33 cases of C difficile, which puts the PCT ahead of target. Both MRSA cases developed outside hospital and were not caused by contact with the health service, but still have to be recorded in figures.

There were 20 C difficile cases in April because an outbreak of the diarrhoea and vomiting bug norovirus at the James Paget helped to spread the bacteria.

Mike Stonard, chief executive of the PCT, said; “We work closely with the James Paget on infection control. I meet their chief executive once a month to discuss it, and we offer the hospital a financial incentive to beat their target on MRSA.”
