Beccles and Halesworth groups join forces to collect for refugees

Two groups organising collections for refugees have joined forces.
Volunteers in Beccles and Halesworth have organised their own sorting and donations, but from now on will be working together to send aid overseas - particularly to Syria and Calais.
Organiser of the Halesworth collections Lucie Rogers said: “Beccles did a day of collections and we’ve taken all their donations to our warehouse in Holton.
“It was a really, really successful collection and we’ve had a huge influx of stuff.”
The first convoy heading for Syria will be making its way to refugee camps early next month, but there is much more work to be done before then.
“A lot of the Beccles group’s volunteers are lending their support and time to us,” said Miss Rogers. “Their hearts are so into it.”
Tom Lee, a member of the Beccles group, said they had a “house full of donations” after a call went out for supplies, as they tried to keep up with the ever-changing needs of refugees in Calais and beyond.
“We have been helping out down at the warehouse,” he added.
To help cover the cost of sending the aid oversees, the group has organised a family fun day this weekend.
From 10am to 10pm at Halesworth’s Rifle Hall, there will be activities for children, hot food and cakes, followed by live music in the evening.
Warm winter clothes, boots and coats are particularly needed. To arrange a donation, search Homes for the Jungle on Facebook or call Lucie Rogers on 01986 895 332.
