Celebrations to mark 10 years since Beccles became a Fairtrade Town have been hailed a success.

Organised as part of Fairtrade Fortnight from February 26 to March 11, events included a special tenth anniversary reception at Hungate Church supported by Waveney MP Peter Aldous and mayor Richard Stubbings, along with representatives from businesses and other local groups.

Pupils at the Sir John Leman High School also got involved with Fairtrade assemblies, and a pop-up café was hosted by the town’s Fairtrade committee at Beccles Library last Saturday.

Elfrede Brambley-Crawshaw, one of the organisers, said: “I was so proud to be part of Beccles Fairtrade 10th anniversary, 10 years is a huge accomplishment and the result of lots of hard work by many people.

“The two events last weekend were a big success and the results of considerable team work by the Fairtrade steering group. We served over 100 hot drinks and many cakes at the pop-up café in the library and my husband David led a Fairtrade-themed Lego club which was very popular with the children that attended.

“We raised over £120 for Beccles Library and the Fairtrade steering group. Here’s to the next 10 years!”
