“It was a great event on a lovely day.”

That was the reaction of organisers as the popular annual Beccles Hospital Fete was hailed a success.

With the very warm weather attracting the crowds on Saturday, June 29 the organisers, Rotary Club of Beccles, were pleased with how the event - held in the hospital grounds - went.

Rotarian Nick Rudge oversaw the event with his committee and was supported by many members, with other organisations contributing their hard work and generosity.

With all the money raised to be distributed between the League of Friends of the hospital and other medically related charities, although the full total is yet to be tallied, it is "looking promising", according to organisers.

After the Mayor of Beccles, Andrea Downes, opened the fête, the Sir John Leman High School Jazz Band and their school choir provided musical entertainment along with a recorder trio from U3A.

The performances by dancers from the June Glennie School of Dance were well received, while refreshments were provided by the Beccles Inner Wheel club.

The Hospital Fete Cup was awarded by the club president Paul Randle to Helping Hands, in recognition of the big contribution to charity fundraising and help in the community.

Waveney MP Peter Aldous attended, while the Beccles Carnival Queen and one of her princesses were also in attendance.

Speaking on behalf of the Rotary club, Paul Randle, said: "This year, as in previous years, Beccles Rotary club through the hospital fete, was able to bring many organisations within the town and district together to raise money for those in need locally.

"It was a great event on a lovely day enjoyed by a wonderful turnout of people.

"I would like to thank all those who made the event possible."

The Beccles Cycle for Life prizes for sponsored riders were also announced at the event.

Lord Somerleyton's prizes were won by Justin Skipper, who raised the most money and Sue Brooham, who raised the second most.

In the draw for sponsored riders Keith Gilbert won the £250 John Lewis gift card donated by Norfolk & Suffolk Financial Planners, with child prizes of £25 John Lewis cards won by Ryan Coles, Ivy Hayward and Zoe Stewart.
