A BECCLES man has been jailed after admitting two counts of fraud by false representation.

Michael Scott, 34, from Banham Road, was charged last Friday after admitting he had taken money from people offering to get them cheap cigarettes - and then failed to return with the promised tobacco.

There were two incidents, one happening between October 1 and November 30 last year, the other last Friday.

In the first case Scott promised that he would purchase £400 worth of cigarettes for a 35-year-old man and took the cash from him but the cigarettes were never supplied.

On Friday he approached several men in Beccles and offered to supply them with cigarettes and work clothing. A quantity of cash was then handed over for goods and Scott was taken to an address to supposedly collect the items but he did not return.

None of the victims of the fraud initially reported the incidents but Scott was arrested by police on Friday after a member of the public became suspicious about his behaviour. Further enquiries then revealed the crimes.

Scott was charged with two counts of fraud by false representation and held for Ipswich Magistrates Court on Saturday. He then appeared at Lowestoft Magistrates Court yesterday and was sentenced to 16 weeks.
