As the country prepares to raise millions once again for Children in Need, a group of schoolchildren from Beccles will be taking on a very special role.

Pupils from Beccles Primary Academy will be taking part in tonight’s BBC TV extravaganza, as they join school children from across the UK for a live performance of The Climb by Miley Cyrus.

Among the performers will be 11-year-old Fran Wright, who said: “This is a great opportunity for our school and we really appreciate it.

“We needed to be heard because we have so many talented children. I’m looking forward to going on TV.”

Jade Applegate, 10, added: “I like singing and I was really excited when we found out that we were going to be on TV.

“My Nanny is really excited about it as well and I want to make her proud.”

The choir has been rehearsing for weeks ahead of tonight’s big performance, giving up their break and lunch times to get it just right, and have also had a chance to show the rest of the school what they are working on.

Isabel Barton, 11, said: “We also practice in front of the whole school in assemblies and we have an after school choir.

“Of course we’re really nervous but when you get up there, it doesn’t seem like there are that many people.”

And choir leader Debbie Ruddock was full of praise for her pupils, who have not been performing as a choir for very long.

“Our choir really only started last year,” she said.

“They have only done a couple of performances, so to be asked to be involved with Children in Need is quite a big deal.”

There will be around 200 children in total performing in the choir, including children from Beccles Primary Academy, Great Yarmouth High School, North Denes Junior school, Reepham High School, St Nicholas Priory and Benjamin Britten High School in Lowestoft.

Children in Need starts at 7.30pm tonight on BBC One.
