Beccles Free School has received a Food for Life bronze award for its healthy and climate friendly food culture.

The award is part of the national Soil Association programme, which encourages schools to connect young people with healthy food choices.

All students at Beccles Free School have the opportunity to visit a local farm and learn about the food life cycle, to practice cooking and participate in different food growing activities.

Students have also designed and planted their own school garden as part of a weekly gardening club, and have been harvesting their own vegetables and herbs which school chef Sonia Rodwell and her team use to prepare fresh lunches.

Headteacher Nigel Youngman said: “Our school garden is a thriving place where students enjoy learning about seasonal produce and also how to grow different plants. We are also pleased that students take an active role in their own school lunches.”
