A 10-year-old boy was left fighting for his life after a collision between a car and a train at Barnby on the Suffolk/Norfolk border on Saturday night.

Bottom of FormA spokesman for the ambulance service said the youngster had been taken to the James Paget Hospital, in Gorleston, with serious and life-threatening injuries.

The boy was a passenger in the car which collided with the train at the level crossing in Beccles Road just before 8.30pm on Saturday.

Firefighters from Lowestoft, Beccles and another crew from Norfolk, were sent to the scene amid fears someone was trapped in the car.

However, when they arrived they found paramedics treating a young male at the roadside, according to a spokeswoman for the fire service.

Two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were also at the scene of the crash.

Early reports suggest the young boy was the only person injured and the ambulance service said there had been no fatalities.
