An inspirational young mother is preparing to tackle two marathons in the space of a month after undergoing nearly two years of treatment for cancer.

Rebecca Mayhew from Woodton is in remission from breast cancer and completes her treatment next month.

On Sunday she is taking part in the Paris Marathon and on May 10 she is joining the London Moonwalk – both to raise money for Walk the Walk, a grant-giving breast cancer charity.

The 35-year-old, who is mum to Isobel, five, and Jack, three, has spent months training for the challenges and is planning to use all her energy and determination to power walk around both circuits.

After completing the Moonwalk for the first time last year in the middle of her treatment, Rebecca plans to push herself even harder to get a personal best at the Paris Marathon.

She said: “I have got to get a better time than last year’s Moonwalk so I have to do it in five hours and 40 minutes to get an official time. I’m going to be powerwalking – I’m still not allowed to run – but it should be achievable as I’m much fitter now.

“It will be nice to do it in daylight as it’s a pretty spectacular place to wander around.”

The marathon begins on the Champs-Elysées with runners crossing the finish line at the Arc De Triomphe, and for Rebecca it will be a moment of high emotion as her husband Stuart and her children will be waiting for her.

She said: “I am hoping someone is going to be waiting at the end with a bottle of champagne and a piece of brie!

“We are going to spend two weeks in France afterwards and we are going to take the children to EuroDisney. Everything I have been through is now starting to come out and they have begun to ask questions, they really deserve a treat.”

Rebecca, who is an auctioneer at Durrants in Beccles, was diagnosed with the disease in August 2012 and has endured a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

She has been receiving the Herceptin drug through a drip every three weeks for the past year to reduce the risk of the cancer returning, with her last drip due to be administered on May 15.

But just before she hits that milestone, Rebecca aims to take on her second marathon of the year, the London Moonwalk, this time with Stuart.

And as tradition goes, both will be sporting a decorated bra incorporating this year’s 1950s theme.

She said: “Obviously Stuart knew I wanted to do it again this year. I don’t think he would have said anything as he knows it’s my thing but when I asked him if he wanted to do it with me he said he would love to. It’s going to be an incredibly emotional day, we have both been through a marathon these past two years.

“I’m going for London next year and I’d love to run it.”
