THE family owners of the Waveney River Centre at Burgh St Peter have scooped another environmental plaudit, winning Practical Boat Owner's magazine's Green Award for Marine Service & Support.
The centre, a holiday park and marina on the Broads promotes sustainability through energy efficiency, recycling, water conservation and customer education.
Sarah Norbury, Practical Boat Owner's editor said: “Practical Boat Owner magazine's Green Awards are a showcase for the innovative work being done by boating companies to reduce their impact on the environment. Waveney River Centre show us that small changes in a workplace can add up to big results.”
Since taking over Waveney River Centre six years ago with Ruth's parents Len and Hazel Funnell, Ruth and James Knight have embarked on a series of initiatives designed to encourage flora and fauna, and reduce their business's carbon footprint.

Among environmentally-friendly projects has been the creation of wildlife habitats for animals and birds, including, last year, a dedicated conservation zone beside a marsh soke dyke.
They have also introduced recycling facilities which visitors are encouraged to use, and constructed mooring board walks from recycled plastics and wood shavings.

Ruth paid tribute to the Waveney River Centre staff team, who had worked very hard to build the Marina's environmental credentials, saying that the PBO award sent a clear message that the Broads are now at the forefront of promoting environmentally sensible boating holidays.
“As well as providing boating facilities, we also offer an inspirational environment for children and adults to explore and make wildlife discoveries,” said Ruth.
“It's a great privilege to live and work in this beautiful region, and we're thrilled that Practical Boat Owner magazine have recognised our efforts in building a sustainable business in an environmentally-sensitive location,” she added.
Prizes will be presented at the Southampton Boat Show on Tuesday, September, 14 at 6pm.
