ELDERLY people's accommodation at Honeypot Meadow and Olland Court, Bungay, will continue to be retained as sheltered accommodation, town councillors heard at their latest meeting.

That was the outcome of a Waveney District Council working group discussion - but councillors were unhappy that the town council had not been part of the consultation process.

“Although our district councillors made us aware that this review was in progress we, and town and parish councils in general, were not a party to this review,” Town Clerk Peter Morrow reported.

He said the working group comprised Waveney officers and members and tenant representatives, who made recommendations to Waveney.

“This included the disposal of four sites at Beccles, Wrentham and Lowestoft for redevelopment. As far as provision in Bungay is concerned the WDC sheltered accommodation at Staithe Road is to be de-sheltered as it does not have communal facilities. This has been made a general requirement for sheltered housing sites,” Mr Morrow added.

“Those residents at Staithe Road who currently have sheltered tenancies will continue to retain them and warden facilities will continue to be available to those residents.”

Though Olland Court and Honeypot Meadow have no community facilities, however, they would be retained as sheltered accommodation, he added.

It led Martin Evans to say Waveney wanted it all ways. There was to be a community room on the old tennis courts (adjacent to the sheltered homes) but that had been shelved. Mr Morrow said he did not know whether there were any plans to add community facilities at Olland Court and Honeypot Meadow.

John Groom said he attended the last meeting of the residents and they appeared to be quite happy with the proposals.

But Dave O'Neill said it was “almost an insult” that the town council had not been consulted on the issue, and Simon Woods, one of Bungay's Waveney representatives, said he would be happy to put forward any views the council had. Bungay's other Waveney member, David Ritchie, was a member of the working group.
