BUNGAY is set to celebrate the Royal wedding in April in style with a town party at the Staithe and Riverside Centre.

Bungay Town Trust and the town council are joining forces to stage the event to mark the wedding of Prince William, second in line to the throne, and his fiance Kate Middleton, on April 29, and a joint meeting was held on Thursday to get the plans under way.

The town reeve, the Rev Roger Allen, and the mayor, Simon Woods, led the discussion and it was agreed to call the event the Riverside Royal Wedding Party.

The choice of the venue means that the event can be held outside but also move inside if the weather is wet.

The town council and Town Trust will be asked to back the cost of the event up to 500, though the plan is that it will break even on cost, with a small charge being made for those who go along.

The focal point of the event will be the screening of the wedding itself on a large screen and arrangements for that will be made as soon as possible. The wedding is set to start at 11am and last for two hours, with the party running from 10am-4pm, or longer if people wanted to continue the celebration.

Ideas discussed at the meeting as part of the day included a procession, a hog roast and bar, a prize for the children in the best wedding attire, morning coffee and afternoon tea, music, videoing the event, and a window display competition. People are being invited to put forward other ideas as well.

People will be invited to bring their own picnics to the party or buy what is on offer. Beer, wine and soft drinks will be available at the Staithe, where the site will be decorated for the occasion.

The Town Trust has been linked with the Royal family in the past, with a number of medallions on the Town Reeve’s chain of office marking royal occasions, including the Queen’s silver jubilee and the wedding of Prince Charles to Princess Diana.

The day of the wedding has already been declared a public holiday.
