BUNGAY Women's Institute tiddled their winks to greater effect than Beccles and chalked up another point for their town in the Beccles v Bungay Challenge.

The match took place at the Quaker Hall at Beccles last Wednesday, with the teams of six lining up to start. Beccles president Barbara Punch said it provided some exciting action.

“What a race there was to flip the counters into the cups. Tension was mounting with supporters encouraging their teams to win,” she said.

After all teams had played three games the final score was counted, with Bungay winning by 13 points, 965-952 - a pretty close result. Afterwards everyone relaxed with refreshments and a nice cup of tea, served by Beccles by Eira Moore and her team.

The winning Bungay team comprised Pauline Palin, Margaret Harper, Margaret Taylor, Margaret Connell, Sylvia Knights, and Angela Leggett-Bond. The Beccles team was Barbara Lamb, Eileen Holtby, Jean Elderfied, Joyce Hall, Joan Farmer and Barbara Crabtree.

Later on Friday evening, Bungay Royal British Legion pulled back the deficit in the second leg of their cribbage match against Beccles RBL at the Ravensmere headquarters.

Bungay trailed by two games (7-5 to Beccles) after the first leg but Bungay chairman Bob Honeywood said: “Thanks to further intense bar training, Bungay looked to be on their way to a famous victory when they overturned that deficit to take a two game advantage by winning the eight singles matches 6-2 to lead 11-9.

“However, Beccles are made of stern stuff and proceeded to move one game ahead again at 12-1 by winning the first three of the four doubles! A nail-biting fourth double finally went Bungay's way by the narrowest of margins to leave a final score of 12 games each after two most enjoyable encounters. Our thanks to Beccles for their hospitality.

With Bungay taking the point at tiddlytwinks and each town taking half a point from the cribbage draw, the overall score remains very close, with Beccles leading 3-2
