Talented performers from Bungay’s youth theatre group will be among the 14 acts taking to the stage in Norwich later this month to win a chance to perform in London.

The Fisher Youth Theatre Group has entered the National Theatre’s Connections Festival and will be performing at Norwich Playhouse on April 19 in the second stage of the competition.

The group will be performing The Musicians by Patrick Marber, about a school orchestra which travels to Moscow to perform but has their instruments impounded at the airport.

The performance follows a three-night run of the same show at Bungay’s Fisher Theatre last month, when a judge from the National Theatre attended.

Laila France, chairman of the youth theatre group and manager of the Fisher Theatre, said: “We’ve now had all the feedback from the director from the National Theatre who came to watch it.

“She thought it was brilliant and said she was really impressed with it so I am so pleased for them.

“There are just a few little tweaks she has suggested and we are rehearsing those now.”

The cast will be performing in front of National Theatre Directors once again in Norwich, and the judges will then pick 12 groups from the 500 entering the festival to perform at the National Theatre in London.

The cast has pulled out all the stops to make their performance perfect, including taking tips from professional musicians on how to pretend to play an instrument, and even learning Russian.

Mrs France said they hope to find out if they have been successful by June.

The Fisher Youth Theatre Group will be performing at Norwich Playhouse on April 19 at 5pm in the second of three shows that day, with other performances being staged at The Garage. Performances from the 13 other youth groups will continue until Friday, April 22.

Tickets cost £2 and are available from www.norwichplayhouse.co.uk or by calling the box office on 01603 598598.
