ANGRY homeowners in Beccles have signed a petition calling for a one-way system in the town to be reassessed.

The petition, which got 367 signatures in just 10 days, was handed to Suffolk County Council's director of environment and traffic, Lucy Robinson, on Monday.

Grove Road first became a one-way street in February and the system was made permanent in April despite the fact that 30 objections were sent to the council.

Of those objections, half wanted the road to be put back to a two-way system while the other 15 wanted the road changed so it flowed in the opposite direction. The petition calls for a public meeting to be held so that more objections can be raised.

Gerald Tompkins, of Beccles, took the petition to the council. He said the system was causing problems for homeowners nearby and drivers travelling through the area because all the cars were being forced along the same roads.

He said: “The increase of traffic going down Ingate has caused huge tailbacks, especially in the morning. They stretch back for three-quarters of a mile. It's a severe nuisance. We cannot get in and out of our drives or even Beccles and the additional noise is worrying for people.”

Mr Tompkins said the delays caused by queues could lose the town's traders business because visitors would no longer come to shop.

He believed many people were strongly against the system as it is at the moment. He said: “I think I could get another 500 signatures in two days if I just stood on Ingate - there are a lot of people being affect by this.”

On Monday county council spokesman Sandra Graffham confirmed they had received the petition. She added: “We will consider the points made and will now be speaking to the local county councillors to get their views on the petition. Lots of people had very different views on this.”
